The cheapest multi-room installation is the one that was planned as a multi-room installation. When points are added one at a time over the years, each is a separate run with its own join, and the result is a loft full of cable that nobody can trace and a picture that fails somewhere unpredictable.

So we ask where you might want a screen later, not just where you want one now. Pulling a spare cable while the roof space is already open costs very little; pulling it in two years' time means starting again.

Every decoder needs its own feed from the dish. For two, a twin-output LNB usually does it. For more than that, the equipment steps up to a multi-output LNB or a multiswitch, which lets several decoders share one dish while each still receives a full signal.

What we avoid is daisy-chaining cheap splitters off one cable. It appears to work at first and then degrades everything downstream, and it is the most common thing we find when we are called to a house where two TVs freeze at the same moment every evening.

At the end of a multi-point job we measure the signal at every outlet, not at one and assume the rest match. A point at the end of a long run often reads lower, and knowing that before we pack up means it gets fixed then rather than becoming next winter's call-out.

Points get labelled where that helps, and you get the readings. If you add a decoder later, that record tells whoever installs it exactly what is already in the wall.
