The dish is aimed at a fixed position in the sky, so the question is not what passes in front of it occasionally but what stands in front of it permanently. A neighbouring double storey, a boundary wall on a rising stand or a mature tree in the wrong corner of the garden are the usual candidates.

Trees are the awkward ones, because they move. A gap that works in winter can close over a single growing season, and the first symptom is a picture that starts breaking up on wet evenings. When we can see that coming, we say so and suggest a position that will still be clear in a few years rather than the one that only just works today.

If no wall on the house gives a clean reading, the answer is usually a pole mount — a properly set post at a point in the garden that does have the view, with the cable brought back to the house underground or along a protected route.

A raised bracket is sometimes enough to lift the dish over an obstruction. Both options cost more than bolting the dish to the nearest gable, and both are cheaper than paying twice because the first attempt was made where it was convenient rather than where it worked.
